VA Launches Operation Sacred Trust in Southern Florida

South Florida has many non-profit organizations with long histories of helping veterans with disabilities and the organizations supporting them. That's why the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) granted 4 of those nonprofits $1 million to be used to launch Operation Sacred Trust. According to an article on The Fatherhood Channel, this operation seeks to bring together multiple neighborhood efforts in one united front to combat homelessness among veterans.

Not only can this initiative "provide a model of community collaboration," it can seek to provide new services, and grant veterans and their families "access to affordable housing." The 4 non-profits granted the money include:

  • Citrus Health Network;
  • Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida;
  • PAIRS Foundation; and
  • Carrfour Supportive Housing.

The initiative is expected to help 1,000 veterans and their families in Broward and Miami-Dade County. In those 2 counties alone, there exist more than 1,000 homeless veterans, and more than 20,000 veterans considered "low-income" living in the area.

This initiative allows people to intervene prior to veterans becoming homeless, so the underlying root of the problem can be handled before it gets out of hand and becomes detrimental. Veterans who are able to participate in the program can undergo a 9 hour training in how to "help families strengthen cohesion" to help deal with their housing stability issues, which is a main issue leading to homelessness among veterans and their families.
