VA Launches VistA Open Source Community

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been working toward building a more effective electronic health record (EHR) system and will roll out that system in waves. On August 30, 2011, the VA finally launched its anticipated open-source community, which can only help issues like veterans disability.

The online community is specifically designed to use detailed information to update its Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) EHR system. According to the VA, the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent (OSEHRA) will function as a centralized controlling element of the VA's entire open-sourced EHR population.

The VA's long-term plan is to bring their VistA system into the modern era by utilizing open-source codes.
At the same time, they will access and employ applications associated with the joint system they have been developing alongside the Department of Defense.

Developing and finally implementing OSEHRA is the first step in the VA's overall strategy in modernizing VistA. This will put the VA on the forefront of launching an EHR community completely rooted in open source technology, according to Secretary Shinseki.

The VA donated all of VistA's relevant computer code to a population of users in the open-source community, which includes service providers and developers. Anyone interested in attempting to improve or augment the software should become members of the OSEHRA community.
