VA Medical Centers Operating At New Readiness Level

A recent story in The Town Talk detailed the heightened level of preparedness at which modern Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers must operate. This new level of readiness is required for patient safety. Ideally, health care for veterans with disabilities will be improved as a result.

In an era where terrorist attacks are an everyday reality, it is vital for those people receiving care from VA hospitals to not only feel safe while under VA care, but to actually be safe.

The vast majority of VA medical centers and hospitals were completely unequipped to handle drastic emergencies on Sep. 11, 2001. Today's VA medical facilities are much better prepared to proficiently handle emergencies.

Whereas previously there were none, guideposts now exist laying out proper protocols for capable health care at times of catastrophes. Some hospitals feature such apparatus as mobile decontamination equipment and can, if necessary, establish a VA medical center on the fly and "in the field." Telemedicine has since become an important tool in reaching and treating veterans living remotely.

An unforeseen benefit to these medical centers working to be more prepared to deal with emergencies is the military was forced to learn more about treating complicatedl wounds, such as
traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). By learning more about being prepared, the military was forced to study such things as damage related to "concussive poundings to the head." In turn, the VA became more proficient at treating such injuries.
