VA & Medicare Starting Blue Button Program for Patient Access to Health Records

September 14, 2010 - Patients who choose to press the blue button will be given access to their personal medical records, starting this October. Any veteran who uses Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care or Medicare and chooses to press the blue button can download portions of their medical records in a text version.

Veterans can put the blue button through its paces this month by logging into their MyHealthVet account. This account creates the veteran's personal health record. It will also include various test results, their health history, and other vital information. Veterans will also be able to log into the Medicare website once the program is operational. This account will give veterans access to information on their claims.

Giving veterans such free access to their health care records will help many businesses comply with new amendments to HIPPA policies requiring they supply patients with copies of their records.

However, this new technology does raise more than a few privacy concerns. While patients will have access to their own medical records, there will be safeguards they must cross before they actually download or print their records. Patients are warned about public downloading and a trail is automatically created so a patient's time online can be tracked.

It is hoped all medical providers will one day offer a blue button and thereby supply accessible health information to their patients. What the patients receive with the blue button will differ based on the organization. Patients will be able to check their records for mistakes, save them, or use them with their health care providers.
