VA Mental Health Care Varies Across the Nation

A recent study published in US News highlighted how veterans with disabilities across the nation receive different levels of mental health care at different Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals.

The amount of money spent on veterans' mental health care
is fairly impressive, and at the same time disappointing for those receiving sub-standard care. In 2007 alone, the VA spent over $12 billion just on veterans' mental health care. The VA's mental health services as a whole are reported to be better than most private sector health care providers, but that doesn't mean there aren't improvements that can be made.

Researchers looked at 5 specific mental illnesses and the treatments they received for those illnesses. The cost for those mental health illnesses was found to be significantly higher than treatments provided for other medical conditions.

The VA was found to be spending just over $12,000 for the mental health treatments as opposed to about $4,500 for other veterans not examined in the study. Researchers also found veterans in the study had 4 "times as many critical inpatient discharges" as well as 3 times more visits to outpatient clinics.

Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
especially, didn't all receive the same recommended behavioral therapy. The researchers looked into 12 care facilities and used 23 specific "performance indicators" to determine the type of care provided to veterans. Of the 12, 3 were meeting 75% of the indicators, and 9 met less than 25%.
