VA Offers $100 Million in Grants to Help Veteran Homelessness

As the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reaches for its goal to end veteran homelessness within the next 3 years, the department recently offered $100 million in grants, according to an article in The Huffington Post.

The grants will be provided to agencies operating at a local, community level
. The VA’s estimates place over 100,000 U.S. veterans on the streets at any given time, of which a great number are veterans with disabilities. The numbers are unacceptable, which is why the VA is reaching out to agencies at the most basic level for help.

Those qualifying agencies will be able to use their part of the $100 million to step in and help those veterans in need, before they lose their homes and are forced to become homeless.

There are a core group of issues that recur in almost every study regarding homeless veterans. The VA’s grants will be used to treat those issues, which include the lack of:

  • ·        counseling;
  • ·        training; and
  • ·        education.

The VA expects to help over 35,000 U.S. veterans and their families through their prevention efforts. The downhill slide many veterans face is a very difficult one to stop, so the VA hopes to prevent that slide from ever happening.
