VA Offers Multiple Grants For Disabled Veterans

December 10, 2010 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers multiple grants to help disabled veterans modify both their homes and their vehicles in order to make them more accessible. Depending on the level of disability from which the veteran is suffering, the grants the veteran will qualify for will vary.

The Vehicle Grant (4502) is offered to disabled veterans who use either manual or power wheelchairs that were issued by the VA and require transportation assistance to travel with their wheelchair. The grant can only be used one time and permits disabled veterans in need to buy vans that are handicap accessible at great discounts. This grant can also be used to retrofit vehicles with wheelchair lifts and wheelchair accessible ramps. The VA is raising the amount available through the 4502 Vehicle Grant from $11,000 to $18,000.

The Automobile Adaptive Equipment Program (AAEP) is available to veterans with service-related injuries after they are given their 4502 Vehicle Grant and have completed the proper driver's training course. Once the veteran completes those requirements, the AAEP will train those veterans how to get in and out of the modified vehicle as well as how to drive the vehicle. To qualify for training on how to operate a vehicle modified for a veteran's disability, the veteran must have:

  • Lost a limb;
  • Lost use of a limb; or
  • Suffer alkalosis of at least one hip or knee.

There are some exceptions to these criteria, so you may want to discuss your eligibility for the program with the local prosthetics Chief in your area.

The Home Improvement and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant program provides disabled veterans one-time monetary grants to be used to modify or improve their homes to make them accessible and adaptive to the veterans' disabilities. Veterans with service-related disabilities can recover up to $4,100 and veterans with non-service related disabilities can recover up to $1,200.

Disabled veterans may also qualify for equipment such as wheelchairs and patient lifts. Veterans' levels of disability will determine what the VA deems them entitled to receive.
