VA Programs Help Returning Veterans Prepare For Work

February 10, 2011 - Many veterans do not return from combat deployments operating on the same wavelength they operated on when they left. It is not just an axiom that combat changes a person. For some, reintegrating to a civilian lifestyle can be just as difficult, if not more so, than being deployed. This is true especially of veterans who have returned stateside suffering from service-related disabilities.

One of the most difficult tasks veterans with service-related disabilities may face stateside is finding employment. This may be due to employers' preconceived notions of combat veterans from constant coverage of such things as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or substance abuse issues, which are real problems among many young veterans.

Whatever the reason, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers multiple programs to help veterans through these times. The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program helps veterans with service-related injuries or disabilities get ready for employment and how to keep the jobs they do find. For those veterans not capable of work because of their injuries, programs are available designed to help them live as independent as their injuries allow.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Transitional Work Experience Program is available to those veterans who need help handling substance abuse problems. The VA also runs the Leadership Development Institute, which lasts 12 months and hones leadership skills for those seeking higher level positions. The goal of all these programs are the same: to help veterans reach the peak of their potential in the work place.
