VA Providing Secure Communications Between Veterans and Physicians

Veteran patients logging onto the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) healthy vet website will notice a new feature. Secure Messaging is a messaging service providing veterans the ability to communicate online with their physicians through a secure VA connection.

The messaging service offers many benefits to those veterans choosing to use it, and will improve the VA healthcare system. Secure Messaging essentially serves as an express, 24-hour connection to their healthcare providers where veterans can count on answers being given to questions about routine matters.

Many veterans feel more in charge of their own care because they can control when the one-on-one communication happens. Information will be shared more freely between veterans and their physicians, which means more efficient record keeping in the VA's electronic patient record system.

Instead of veteran-patients having to wait for their next appointment, or trying to get their physician on the phone, Secure Messaging allows patients and their physicians to discuss what the veteran finds important when the veteran finds it important.

Physicians can use Secure Messaging to:

  • provide laboratory results;
  • tend to particular medical concerns veterans have; and
  • refill medications.

Secure Messaging is gradually being made available across the country, and will eventually be available at all VA facilities.
