VA Psychiatrists Suspended Over Comments on PTSD Reviews

Investigations have been launched into the conduct of 2 psychiatrists at the Madigan Army Medical Center after reports of inappropriate handling of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) screenings. The doctors are on temporary suspension from clinical tasks until further investigation has been concluded.

Dr. William Keppler is one of the doctors that were assigned to a forensic medical team charged with reviewing a group of disabled veterans’ PTSD claims. More than a dozen soldiers had filed for a new disability review after they claimed their PTSD diagnosis was wrongfully dropped by the psychiatric team at Madigan.

During a presentation in September 2011, Keppler and some of his associates allegedly made negative comments regarding the investigation and his team’s role in financial matters during the Army retirement process. One of the accusations they reported was many veterans were faking there illness so they wouldn’t have to work.

While PTSD has been gaining more recognition as a service-connected disability and has qualified many disabled veterans for veterans’ disability benefits, it is still a widely contested condition. Many doctors believe it is being over-diagnosed and there is still controversy about treatments and the impact it may have on a disabled veteran’s life.
