VA Removing Multiple Businesses From West LA Campus

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has taken a lot of criticism for allowing commercial businesses to exist on their 387-acre West Los Angeles (LA) VA campus. Interest groups claim the VA has been neglecting their duties to veterans and not treating veterans disabilities as they should have been. One of the chief complaints is the VA leasing out parts of the campus to commercial interests, whereas that space should be used to help veterans.

To demonstrate their commitment to put the interest of homeless veterans and those in need of treatment above their own commercial interests, the VA has informed 3 of their tenants including a car rental firm, a bus company, and a commercial laundry company, to vacate the premises. These 3 are among approximately 24 private companies on the VA's West LA campus under land use agreements.

The notices to vacate come as a result of a new VA plan, which will change how the campus is used. That plan requires the VA to re-examine the commercial leases to ensure those companies remaining on the VA's campus benefit veterans in some way. That plan is seemingly responsive to a lawsuit filed earlier in the year outlining the VA's fiduciary breach in using the campus for anything except treating disabled and homeless veterans.
