The Compensated Work Therapy program (CWT) has been in effect to help
U.S. veterans get back on their feet and was recently evaluated by the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations in a hearing called,
“Is It Working: Reviewing VA’s Compensated Work Therapy Program.”
During the evaluation, members of the
subcommittee focused on the significance of the CWT for providing veterans with resources for training, education, and employment across the country. The chairman, Bill Johnson, cited some of the notable local success stories, such as the program in Bedford, MA.
The Bedford CWT program has aligned with over 15 local businesses to encourage
training and employing veterans. The local
businesses have benefitted from disciplined, eager workers while the veterans have not only been able to earn an income but also the opportunity to train in a new field.
The subcommittee did note that CWT programs in other areas haven’t been as successful, leaving many opportunities for improvement in the coming years.
While the intent to help veterans is there, many lack the resources and organization to truly make an impact.
When programs such as the CWT are evaluated by the government changes are likely to be made.
