VA’s Blue Button Program Receives Feature Enhancement for Veterans

As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) My HealtheVet online portal, the Blue Button system has received another upgrade that will allow veterans to better access their medical records.

The Blue Button system received an upgrade in 2011 to test a new mobile application that would allow veterans with Apple iPhones to access their My HealtheVet account, which will now be available this year. While working on this upgrade, the app teams began enhancing the connectivity between the mobile app and personal accounts.

The primary function of the Blue Button system is to allow veterans to download their personal health history from their account and use it to conveniently and privately share with doctors and family members. Veterans can also use the system to make better life decisions, such as healthy eating options, and exercise techniques.

This system has the potential to help increase the health care options for veterans who may be struggling with the VA system and help with obtaining non-VA care. The easier it is for veterans to access their medical records the better control they can have over their medical care.
