VA Sec. Eric Shinseki: Future Veterans Benefits Are Safe

There are more veterans than ever in need of veterans benefits and health care and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is struggling to keep up with their demands. The number of veterans suffering from serious medical and mental health conditions is on  the rise. According to VA Sec. Eric Shinseki, however, the VA will meet the challenge. Those examining the current VA claims backlog are skeptical of such claims.

Sec. Shinseki recently spoke at the AMVETS national convention. By his estimates, the number of soldiers who will become veterans between 2011 and 2016 will total about 1 million. The only way to ensure the VA can handle those types of numbers is to make sure the VA is ready to handle these numbers.

According to Sec. Shinseki, the VA is making efforts to be ready. The VA is attempting to computerize the portion of their system in which they use paperwork to link veterans with their earned benefits. Sec. Shinseki went on to outline renewed efforts to meet their 2015 goal of ending homelessness among veterans.

Sec. Shinseki also laid out plans for what he referred to as a "reverse bootcamp" to combat unemployment among veterans. The "bootcamp" will ideally aid veterans to transition from their military lifestyle to a civilian lifestyle, which may include college, which can be attended via the GI Bill.

Since 2009, the VA's budget has been enlarged by more than $15 billion. Despite the growing veteran population requiring help, if Sec. Shinseki is to be believed, the VA will be ready for the challenge.
