The Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) has settled a class-action lawsuit resulting from the data breach fiasco in 2006 when the laptop and external drive of a data analyst was stolen from his home. The data analyst, a subcontractor for Unisys, took the computer home without permission. The names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of approximately 26.5 million active duty troops and veterans were on the machines.
The terms of the settlement require the VA to pay $20 million. The money will be distributed to military personnel and veterans who are able to prove that they were harmed by the data breach. Individual payments can be as high as $1,500.
After the settlement was announced, the VA said in a statement: "We want to assure veterans there is no evidence that the information involved in this incident was used to harm a single veteran."
A U.S. District Court judge in Washington has to approve the terms of the settlement before it becomes final.
