VA Steadily Improving Heath Care Provided to Female Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) mission is to serve and take care of veterans. Up until the last couple of years, that mission was very singularly focused on providing one type of care, and all veterans, male and female alike, were given the same care. Over the last couple of years, however, the VA has shifted the focus of their care and has spent significant time developing care directed toward, and for, female veterans.

Many female veterans reported feeling as if they were "invisible second thoughts" when it came to receiving VA health care. Various programs and a very different focus over the last couple of years, however, have changed the VA's health care culture. Resultantly, VA health care has become much more inclusive.

Female soldiers make up 15% of today's armed forces. During the Vietnam and Korea era, only 3% of the services were female. It's clear different services and different care are necessary for a population of that size, and still growing.

The VA announced it will provide monthly updates as to the progress it is making in developing better health care for female veterans. The most recent topic of service was providing maternity care.

Possibly the most important thing the VA is doing for female veterans is attempting to ensure female veterans are aware as to the benefits to which they are entitled. The VA is also providing training to health care providers not used to providing health care for women.
