December 9, 2010 - Those veterans receiving health care treatment outside of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system can have their medical records accessed by VA physicians. Healthcare providers existing in more rural areas of the state of Utah will be connected to the VA via Utah's Health Information exchange.
This is the 5th time private health care providers and the VA have been linked across the United States. The connection is made by accessing the nationwide health information network (NHIN), which provides a secure platform in which to allow private healthcare providers and the VA to exchange information over the Internet.
The VA's ultimate goal is to establish one system able to follow veterans' personnel, medical, and benefits records from the day they enter the service through their lives. This will all become part of the VA's virtual lifetime electronic record program (VLER).
The Utah Health Information Network encompasses about 90% of Utah's medical providers to include laboratories and ambulatory surgery centers. The pilot exchange will be between Allen Memorial Hospital in Moab, Utah, including all participating physicians, and VA medical centers.
Recent records show 7 out of 10 veterans use private health care, at least in part. Physicians on both sides of the network will be able to view health care records over the network exchange. In the end, it is hoped more services will become available to veterans in the future because of the exchange.
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
At LaVan and Neidenberg, we are determined to secure veterans their rightful disability compensation and disability rating. We wrote this book for you! In it you will find valuable tips on how to navigate the claims process and avoid common pitfalls. Request your FREE copy today!
