VA To Provide Pentagon More Mental Health Support

November 4, 2010 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is developing a pilot program, which will be used to test their ability to provide expanded mental health support to the Pentagon. Telehealth services will be Included in the pilot program.

The VA and the Department of Defense (DoD) are working together to build all the necessary avenues in which to deliver mental health services to the pentagon through larger projects. Both agencies are dedicated to providing soldiers in need with proper mental health treatment, both through face-to-face therapy and the implementation of telehealth services on a much larger scale.

The Army's Vice Chief of Staff, Gen. Peter Chiarelli, believes there are even more ways to reach troops in need. Gen. Chiarelli is advocating for the establishment of a virtual behavioral health program, and the sooner it is put into place the better. This program would have VA mental health professionals connect with soldiers over personal computers via video teleconferencing. Because of the Army's limited number of clinicians, the VA's assistance is necessary to develop the program.

The VA has an established history in providing mental health services via the telehealth services. The pilot program will serve to help many hundreds if not thousands of troops and provide more help for more soldiers.
