The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy, located in Charleston, S.C. processes more than 100,000 prescriptions on a daily basis, 5 days a week. This equates to approximately 25 million prescriptions every year.
In the wake of discovering some VA facilities used contaminated products, the VA wants to ensure everyone handling those prescriptions wash their hands on a regular basis. The VA is getting aggressive on this position and is going beyond posting signs to remind employees to wash their hands before returning to work.
The VA is taking advantage of available technology and if it has its way, the 300 employees of the processing factory will start using a high-tech "hand washing verification system."
The hand washing system is a subpart of a Real Time Location System the VA is seeking to establish inside the processing facility. In addition to tracking employees and the rates at which they wash their hands, the system would also be used for such tasks as following computers and observing refrigerator temperatures housing pharmaceuticals.
The system will be able to follow employee hand washing habits as those employees approach hand washing stations, which are spread throughout the facility. The system would also monitor the hand washing product being dispensed while the employee is at the station and would track the event via the employee's badge.
