VA Trains Veterans for Employment with New Education Program

In the continuing effort to find new resources to help train and employ disabled veterans the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched a new education program designed to train wounded veterans as acquisition professionals.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, January 19 opened the new VA Acquisition Academy Acquisition Internship School’s new education course called Warriors to Workforce Program. The program gives disabled veterans the opportunity to engage in a 3-year internship that can help them gain the skills necessary, such as sounds business decisions and a trustworthy business partner, to start a career as a contracting specialist.

The center, located in Frederick, MD, partners with Mount St. Mary’s University for the first year of curriculum, which includes basic business principles and a few contracting-specific classes. The second and third years are designed to provide curriculum based on the Federal Acquisition Institute’s business and technical abilities.

Veterans who begin the program start off as GS-5s but can graduate from the program as GS-11s and are often able to find placement at VA contracting organizations across the U.S. Currently, the first class consists of interns from 10 states and 4 military branches with a combined total of 170 years of military service.
