VA & US Army Work Together To Strengthen SimLEARN

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of the US Army have joined forces. Their cooperative effort is focused on heightening the level of VA provided healthcare. Together they are working to make top-of-the-line medical simulation training available to VA medical staff.

The Army and the VA alliance comes with a $5 million price tag. The Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) will supply the basic needs as far as acquiring equipment and supplies. The VA will use this knowledge to build up their Simulation Learning, Education, and Research Network (SimLEARN) program.

The end product of this collaboration will improve and enhance the level of healthcare the VA provides veterans. At the same time, the VA is able to purchase the best, yet most affordable, simulation equipment. The work these two agencies are doing together now is laying the groundwork for a unified standard of simulated medical training. In the end, veterans across the country will benefit from more skilled healthcare providers.

The SimLEARN Program is designed to provide a supportive environment in which clinicians can practice medical simulations at more than 150 VA medical centers. In addition to building individual skills, the program serves to build team communication and performance.
