The claims backlog at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is something the VA has attempted to address for years. For the most part, those efforts have all failed to put the VA in a better position. The VA's newest effort to clear the backlog involves installing a new computer system, but it is not known how long it will take to make a positive impact on the VA claims backlog.
According to VA Sec. Eric Shinseki, the new system will go online next year and start to process the hundreds of thousands of backlogged cases. Before the new system is implemented, however, the VA is going to ensure it works as it is supposed to. It is believed taking the claims out of a paper-based system will speed up the processing time.
Why it took the VA so long to introduce automation to their claims process is unknown. The current processing time is placing a huge burden on veterans. While they are waiting for the VA's answer, veterans with injuries and disabilities are forced to find another way to support themselves.
