The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) have named July as the month they will be going live with their first graphical user interface for their integrated electronic health record (iEHR).
The prototype for the interface has already been built, and this interface will serve as the "front-end" of the EHR system.
This interface is being celebrated because it is universal to both VA and DoD medical personnel, which will help them treat their respective patients in the system with more informed accuracy. Although the "front-end" interface rolls out in July, the two agencies will not see "significant functionality" until June 2012.
Both departments are making rapid progress toward establishing and stabilizing the EHR system and database. The open source techniques the agencies are using are helping the speed at which they can develop and make improvements upon the EHR platform. Both departments are utilizing private sector companies to construct applications necessary to make the platform a success.
The iEHR interface is going to be an open and common interface, which will supply a common data standard. Utilizing common data as well as common data centers for data storage is what will make this interface such a worthy achievement.
