Variety of Health Care Coverage Available for Veterans

November 17, 2010 - One thing veterans are certainly owed by this country is health care. Veterans today have options to choose from when they are considering coverage for their health care.  For those veterans who qualify, health care at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and clinics is always available.

Medicare benefits may also be available to veterans with specific disabilities, as well as those aged 65 and older. Medicare benefits are earned just as VA benefits are earned and if they are not used, they are lost. Many of these benefits can be used to supplement VA health care benefits for free or low cost. There is a distinct difference, however, between the benefits offered by the VA and the benefits offered by Medicare.

The VA health care system currently services over 8,000,000 veterans and their families and eligibility for the benefits works off priority. Veterans qualifying for VA benefits can take advantage their extensive offerings, which include use of VA hospitals, clinics, and doctors as long as they are using the VA health care system. Medicare's costs for co-pays, drug costs, and prescription drugs are generally higher than what the VA offers qualifying veterans.

Medicare is broken into 4 parts, each covering specific offered services. Most inpatient services, to include home help and hospice, do not require a premium be paid. Payroll taxes fund most outpatient services, to include doctor visits. Everything above can also be combined into a single plan, which is operated by a private insurance company, and is sometimes offered at no cost by certain companies. Medicare also extends coverage for drugs.

Despite veterans being able to use VA health care services as well as Medicare, there are limitations as well. Some veterans could have their benefits limited, or even unable to be used. Some veterans may even face penalties or fines for not enrolling at specific times. Although there are many benefits to using both services, everything has to be considered before making a choice.
