The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has had its share of successes and failures within their information technology (IT) department. As the VA has grown in size, it has not only had issues with the developing technology in their IT department, it has also suffered multiple scandals.
Recently, however, the department has gotten to a point where it can serve as a model for other federal agencies choosing to modernize their network so as to become more efficient. It is no coincidence much of this improvement came following the VA's hiring of Roger Baker, who serves as the VA's Chief Information Officers (CIO) two years ago.
Baker has not only consolidated the VA's IT infrastructure, he has also started moving many of the VA's applications into a cloud computing setting. He has also been a strong proponent of sharing health care and medical data with the Department of Defense (DoD) on a more effective and usable platform.
Consolidating the VA's IT system, which was disorganized to say the least, was almost 100% completed before Baker ever set foot in his current role. That system centralization, however, has served as a jumping off point for the vast majority of the VA's current "IT deployments."
The VA's current configuration is such that it has only one infrastructure, which operates a single email system. This provides the possibility of uniform configurations across the network for both laptop and desktop computer systems.
