Tristan Wyatt knows that there's much more to treating a disabled U.S. veteran than providing therapy or physical therapy for prosthetics, which is why he uses his experience to help other veterans with disabilities to re-adjust to civilian life.
Wyatt joined the Army when he was 19. At 20 he, along with 2 other squad members, each lost a leg after being attacked in Fallujah in 2003. Wyatt now wears a prosthetic and uses his experience to help recently injured veterans come to terms with their injuries.
Wyatt provides experience and a realistic view into what newly-injured veterans can expect from themselves, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and others. He reinforces to them that at no point are they alone, and going through the process of learning to live with a prosthetic may be a slow progression.
Much of Wyatt's time is spent showing veterans that their lives aren't over, and by adapting their injury to activities they once enjoyed or learning new ones, remaining active is still possible, which can also serve to reignite the camaraderie many feel they lose when they leave the service.
Wyatt understands the instinct many disabled veterans have to withdraw from society but encourages them to stay involved. He encourages veterans to not live in the past, but look at what's made available in the present. By providing a focused and caring environment, Wyatt is able to provide disabled veterans with the same hope he was given after his injury.
