Veteran-Centric Healthcare Apps To Be Improved

Since the April 7 release of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense's (DoD) jointly released "PTSD-Coach" application for mobile phones, the app has been downloaded more than 12,000 times. The app was designed not to treat soldiers and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but to help them through those "difficult" times when help is not readily available.

It has proven to be not only successful and helpful, but an "ideal setting" in which to help those veterans in need. Because of how helpful the PTSD-Coach app has been, the VA and the DoD are collecting more information so as to provide even better care for those struggling veterans.

The app collects no information that could be used to identify its users. This means the information from the app that is sent to the VA and the DoD is "anonymous, aggregate data."

There is, however, a study currently being conducted with patients agreeing to allow their personal information to be collected in order to determine what people use the most, and what does not work. The next logical step would be to have the app collect information on its users and incorporate that information with the joint VA-DoD electronic health records (EHRs).

The Blue Button mobile app is also being improved and updated. This app provides patients the ability to download their personal EHRs "on-the-go." This is highly useful for those patients requiring medical attention who are not able to be treated in a DoD or VA medical center.

The Blue Button app will now allow users to access lab results. This prevents the patient from the possibility of having to undergo additional testing if he or she forgets to take paper print outs of their results from specialists. In the near future the app will include XML tagging and image capabilities, which probably means access to x-rays. Its functionality will likely be upgraded this coming fall.
