Veterans Disability Discounts Addressed on November 2012 Ballot

Amendment SJR 592 is an adjustment to the Florida property tax law that would allow disabled veterans to claim discounts on property tax on the November state ballot. This item has been brewing for almost a year now, which is a Florida-focused amendment that passed the Florida Senate and House in May 2010.

The proposed amendment, known as Florida Veterans Property Tax, Amendment 2, extends the discounting rights for ad valorem tax that were granted in 2010 to all veterans established as Florida residents. If the amendment passes in November, all veterans that are disabled from combat, who are currently Florida residents, will be able to take advantage of these tax discounts, regardless of where they resided prior to service.

Current tax discounts for veterans who were not Florida residents before their service are 5% unless they have a 100% disability rating
, which grants them a 100% discount. Veterans who were Florida residents prior to service are granted a tax discount based upon their disability rating. If the new amendment is passed, all disabled veterans currently residing in Florida will have their tax discount calculated based upon their disability rating.
