According to a recent study, veterans may experience psychogenic non-epileptic seizures for longer periods of time without being properly diagnosed than their civilian counterparts. The reason for this may very well be because these specific types of seizures are psychological as opposed to being the types of seizures related to epilepsy. When seizures are disabling and are service-connected, veterans disability claims can be filed.
Those suffering from psychogenic seizures are often diagnosed with epilepsy. People given drugs to control epileptic seizures but do not suffer from epileptic seizures are unfortunately forced to face potentially serious side effects. Often proper diagnosis is difficult because of the similarity in appearance between the two different types of seizures.
The study examined 10 years of medical records and compared the differences between 203 veterans and 726 civilians, all of whom had been admitted to epilepsy monitoring units. A total of 50 veterans were diagnosed with psychogenic seizures. Researchers then compared those veterans with 50 civilians with the same diagnosis.
According to researchers, it took about 5 years from the point where veterans started showing symptoms to actually receive a psychogenic seizure diagnoses. For civilians, it only took about 1 year for the same diagnosis. It was believed almost 60% of the 50 veterans in the study suffered from seizures due to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
The disparity in the diagnoses was not readily explained but could be due to the very few Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers containing epilepsy monitoring units. It could also be due to veterans simply accepting a diagnosis of epilepsy because it can be caused by TBIs, which are more common than ever.
