Veterans Religious Freedom Act Proposed

Recent events at the Houston National Cemetery have put the cemetery on the forefront of the argument on censoring religious freedom. Those events triggered multiple lawsuits against the cemetery.

In response to the series of events, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) introduced the Veterans' Religious Freedom Act, according to The Humble Observer. The legislation seeks to prevent the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from acts of religious censorship during funerals for veterans. If it passes, the VA cannot limit the free speech of any speaker at a veterans' funeral, which includes representatives from veterans' organizations.

Additionally, the bill requires every cemetery director to be a veteran, a measure which must be fully implemented with 90 days of the bill becoming law. Its passage would also require the VA to ensure veterans' families are aware of every possible funeral option when planning the services for their veterans.

Rep. Poe referred to the events at the Houston National Cemetery as "un-American," "anti-veteran," and "inexcusable."
