June 4, 2010 - Many veterans return to the civilian world with injuries of varying incapacitation. Some of these veterans never quite adapt to their new life. Others dig down and drive on, as they have been taught to do from day one of soldier life.
A group of about 30 veterans demonstrated that "drive on" mentality as they rode their bicycles through Sonoma Valley. The majority of these veterans are disabled in one way or another and most of them were veterans of the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. These veterans are on a cross country bicycle ride starting in San Francisco and ending in Virginia Beach.
Every veteran in the pack is riding in hopes of inspiring other veterans. They are all riding to demonstrate that disabilities do not end lives. Some of these riders are suffering from spinal cord injuries, some are missing limbs, and one is pedaling with his hands.
The pack will stop in various communities across the country. The plan is for local riders and celebrities to fall into and out of the pack but somewhere around 30 of them will be on the bikes for the entire 4,000 miles. The ride should reach Virginia Beach by July 24 and some notables will be with the pack the entire time:
If there is going to be a group of people proving being disabled does not prevent living an active life, that group of people are going to be veterans. Hopefully these veterans will inspire other disabled veterans to get back into living an active life.
