Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act Passes House

The U.S. House Veterans Affairs Committee passed an amendment to a larger bill last week affecting veterans and their right to bear arms. Ammoland reported the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act passed through the House Committee attached to H.R. 2349, and speaks to veterans' ability to keep possession of their firearms given certain "mental health decisions" as part of their veterans disability claim.

Under current law, if a veteran has an appointed fiduciary handling his or her veterans' benefits, that person is considered to be "adjudicated as a mental defective." That adjudication means those veterans are not allowed to possess firearms.

That law has been attacked by multiple veterans' groups as well as the National Rifle Association (NRA). Their main argument against the law is that it effectively serves to disarm citizens without determining if that veteran is a threat to him or herself or others.

If it passes, the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act will force veterans to be found a threat to themselves or others by a court of law before being disarmed.
