Veterans Warned About Non-VA Related Veterans Affairs Services

February 8, 2011 - Kevin Secor is a liaison for the Veterans Service Organization (VSO), which is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Secor is warning veterans about a group called Veterans Affairs Services (VAS), who is giving out information on VA benefits while collecting veterans' personal information. Secor's warning: there is no affiliation between the Veterans Affairs Services and the VA.

The VA is a government organization; the Veterans Affairs Services is not. As such, the VA's website ends in .gov. Veterans Affairs Services' websites, which list "vaservices" following the "www" section of a web address are not government run websites. It is through these sites the Veterans Affairs Services collects personal information on veterans. Secor's warning cautions all veterans to never visit any of these websites and certainly to never provide any personal information to this organization in any form.

Secor seeks to remind veterans the VA will not call veterans indiscriminately, nor will it attempt to elicit information not already on file, e.g., social security numbers. Essentially, if you have no history with the VA, a sudden call from someone representing they are from the VA attempting to get personal information from you is not from the VA. The same cautions extend to emails as the VA does not conduct officially sanctioned business, nor do they solicit personal information, via email.

Given the Veterans Affairs Services' purposefully created similarity to the VA, it is not hard to see how veterans could be confused into providing personal information. Further, the Veterans Affairs Services are forbidden by law to help veterans prepare or file any disability claims in any manner.
