Simply returning to the U.S. following a tour of duty takes a certain level of adjustment for most soldiers. Many soldiers, however, return to lives different than the ones they left and still others return with plans of starting new lives.
In order to make that transition smoother for veteran-students, and those drawing veterans disability, 5 campuses across the country have been chosen to host the Veteran-Student Academic & Wellness Program (VSAWP), which is sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
One of the main purposes of the VSAWP is to guarantee
a "safe haven" for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan during their transition from soldier to student-veteran. Additionally, the program will attempt to provide every advantage and opportunity necessary to guarantee the success of veterans as they attend college.
Student-veterans very often find themselves enrolling in school too soon after returning to the U.S. and before they are mentally ready for the challenge. Many of these veterans, unfortunately, fail to finish college because they cannot adapt to college life at the same time they are adapting to their new role in life as a civilian.
The program is designed to help student-veterans overcome those issues traditional students simply do not face by offering such services as: ·
tutoring; ·
counseling; ·
case management; ·
primary care; and
·
peer support. Possibly the most important thing for
student-veterans is
peer support. Often, veterans who are able to find support with other veterans find it easier to endure the transition from their military life to their civilian life.
If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help. To learn if you are entitled to certain programs and benefits
