Vietnam and Iraq Veterans Show Common PTSS Risk Factors

A recent study found the risk factors associated with post-traumatic stress symptoma tology (PTSS) in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are very similar to those risk factors found in Vietnam veterans, according to an article in Marketwatch. PTSS is just short of "full blown" post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although rarely heard of, it is a very serious condition.

The study looked at 579 veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who had combat experience, and had returned to the U.S. in the last year. Researchers then looked at multiple risk factors found among Vietnam veterans with PTSS, and found similarities in:

  • combat exposure;
  • pre-deployment exposure to stress;
  • dysfunctional family environment as a child;
  • lack of emotional support during post-deployment; and
  • post-deployment exposure to stress.

The study had also found that female veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan have more in common with male veterans as far as suffering from mental health conditions, than their Vietnam counterparts. This is mainly due to female veterans playing much different roles in the current wars.

For example, female veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan reported 2 PTSS risk factors not reported in female Vietnam veterans, which include combat exposure and perceived threats.
