March 31, 2011 - Many Vietnam veterans were not given pleasant receptions when they returned to the United States following their tour of service. Since then, very few organizations have come into existence offering support or help specifically for Vietnam veterans. Those Vietnam veterans in Jacksonville, however, now have that support. The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) have established and opened their latest charter in the city.
This is the latest addition to the 630 national chapters. "Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another" has become the national motto and dictates the chapters' behavior and how they treat every member. That idea permeates into every local chapter.
The VVA chapter works to promote and endorse issues relevant, applicable, and pertinent to those Vietnam veterans in Jacksonville. Although many will overlap with national issues, there will also be local, divergent concerns and problems. The Jacksonville VVA chapter is dedicated to helping veterans find help through programs and resources exclusive to the area.
Creating a positive image for Vietnam veterans is another one of the VVA's goals. Many times Vietnam veterans are portrayed as alcoholics and drug addicts, and that image seems to have become pervasive. Putting more Vietnam veterans into the public eye that defy the established stereotypes will help to create that positive image.
Jacksonville alone contains enough veterans to support 4 different VVA chapters. Now it is just a matter of getting those Vietnam veterans and the VVA together.
