Vietnam War Veteran Using Service Dog for Support

According to an article on WOAI.com, “Train a Dog - Save a Warrior” trains service dogs to help war veterans with emotional problems, and is now helping its first Vietnam War veteran.

Perry David served in Vietnam and now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Tourette’s syndrome.
Over the last 10 years he has barely left his home, and his relationship with his wife has crumbled before his eyes.

David recently got Nina, a rescued German Shepherd, from the Train a Dog - Save a Warrior group, and she has already made a significant impact on his life. Nina helps David primarily with his PTSD issues, which involve navigating crowds. When she senses he’s becoming overwhelmed, she will lead him away from the situation and the stressors.

The organization is spending time with David and Nina before they return home together to make sure both are trained and compatible. The pair will spend about 3 weeks with a trainer from the organization making sure not only that Nina is doing her job as she was trained to be responsive to David’s specific needs, but that David is capable of being out in public after such a long hiatus.

PTSD dogs also help war veterans with such problems as “nightmares, nightterrors, and flashbacks.” The dogs are trained to lick the veterans until they wake up out of the nightmare or flashback.
