Visually Impaired Florida Woman Recognized for Her Service

A Florida woman was named one of the Goodwill's 2010 Graduates of the Year for her advocacy with the visually impaired.
Those who suffer from visual impairments or are statutorily blind, and are unable to work, may qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

Sandra Martin, of Florida, has worked to help improve the lives of people with disabilities and visual impairments. Martin initially began losing her sight as a result of juvenile diabetes. A few weeks after she gave birth to her daughter, she completely lost the ability to see. When Martin's daughter was a teenager, Martin overheard a conversation in which someone said Martin's daughter would have to care for her for the rest of her life. At that point, she decided to take steps to gain more independence.

Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida helped Martin to put together a resume and assisted her in applying for jobs. She was eventually hired by the Visually Impaired Persons of SW Florida, working as an outreach coordinator. Since then her work as an advocate for the visually impaired has earned her the prestigious award as being one of Goodwill's 2010 Graduates of the Year.

Her work has brought about adaptive voting machines for voters who are visually impaired. She has also made it possible for blind pedestrians to more safely cross intersections by advocating the implementation of accessible pedestrian signals.

If you have a visual impairment or suffer from any other severe mental or physical condition, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility.
