Vitamin B May Help Delay— or Even Prevent—Dementia

Researchers have discovered that vitamin B may help delay or even prevent dementia, a serious neurological condition that is often associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's can be a debilitating condition that completely changes the quality of a person's life and may lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits.

In a recent study, participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were divided into 2 groups. One group received vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid supplements while the other group received a placebo.

Researchers chose these specific types of supplements because they are known to control an amino acid, homocysteine. Homocysteine, in higher levels, has been found to increase the risk of Alzheimer's.

After following these participants for 2 years, it was found that those who had taken the supplements experienced less brain atrophy, or, loss of brain cells. In fact, those who had started off with the highest levels of homocysteine experienced 50% less brain shrinkage.

Researchers hope that this may prove to be a simple way to help prevent dementia. Much more research will be done to better track this theory.

If you suffer from dementia, Alzheimer's disease or any other severe mental or physical condition, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. You should contact a Social Security disability attorney who can advise you of your eligibility.
