WA City Offers Utility Assistance to Disability and SSI Recipients

Having proof of Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income can help many people obtain assistance that does not include being sent monthly checks. Instead, some types of assistance typically help make certain bills more affordable.

According to Federal Way News, those who are disabled have been eligible for the City of Federal Way's Utility Tax Rebate Program since 2007. This service is meant to help both low-income seniors and disabled people in the Washington city of Federal Way pay for their utility bills. The program covers the cost of the city's utility tax on bills like gas, landline phones, cell phones, garbage and recycling, electricity, cable television, and pagers.

The tax rate is 7.75%, and the program appears to lend just over $100 to each recipient on average.  Of course, the actual amount varies depending on the total bills.

While applicants must show proof of limited household income, such as thorough bank statements, they are also required to have proof of disability or SSI benefits. They can qualify this way, or they can qualify as a senior by being 65 or older. Additionally, utility bills will need to be presented.

In some cases, applicants are allowed to show proof that a doctor finds them disabled, but typically, being able to merely prove the existence of SSI or disability benefits is easier because it does not require a trip to the doctor.

This is not the only program that offers assistance to people who can prove that they receive checks from the SSA. Clearly, having monthly benefits is helpful in and of itself, but having the ability to qualify for local programs like this one can help save hundreds of dollars per month.
