Warrior Games Help Injured Veterans Recover

The 2011 Warrior Games were held in Colorado Springs last month. The Warrior Games are "Olympic-style" competitive events, but held specifically for military members suffering from illnesses and injuries.

Almost 200 injured veterans from all branches competed in this year's games. Many younger veterans, specifically those from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, are developing positive attitudes toward their injuries in order to help with their recovery. This positive attitude is rooted in a sports culture and consists of seeking out such events because of the healing power of competition.

This attitude is in direct contrast to how many veterans of previous generations handled their injuries. Whereas a certain percentage of older-generation veterans sought solace in substance abuse, younger veterans have been presented with more opportunities and outlets to foster a positive response to facing a lifetime of disability.

Recent advancements in equipment for adaptive sporting events have made participation in such games much more plausible for many more veterans. Sports are becoming integral in veterans' recovery.

The modern approach to post-injury therapy paints a much more hopeful picture for veterans' long-term health and mental well-being.
Being able to play sports while suffering from severe injuries builds confidence in injured veterans and is an important consideration for many veterans.
