Wearable Defibrillators Could Save Lives of Heart Arrhythmia Patients

In a report from the American Heart Association (AHA), wearable defibrillators could save the lives of patients with heart arrhythmia. Long-term disability benefits could be available for those individuals who are unable to work for several months due to a severe medical condition.

It was found that nearly 92% of heart arrhythmia patients survive sudden death as a result of wearable defibrillators. They are used for those patients who are waiting for a heart transplant, whose heart function is weak, and those who are not able to have or are still waiting for an implantable defibrillator.

Wearable defibrillators are able to monitor the patient’s heart rhythm, provide an electric shock to the heart, if necessary, and sound an alarm indicating that the heart has stopped or some other severe problem exists.
They are worn for an average of 60 days.

The results of this study indicate the benefit in a wearable defibrillator for high risk patients. With the potential for treatment to be delayed, many lives could be saved.
