Weekend Retreats For Veterans and Their Spouses Help with Reintegration

January 27, 2011 - Returning from a combat deployment takes its own unique toll on soldiers. At the same time, soldiers are being forced back into the civilian world and a life they left behind usually a year or more prior. Many times reconnecting with loved ones, including spouses, often becomes difficult.

A recent study found 90% of veterans rated their marriages somewhere between average and excellent prior to being deployed. That number dropped to around 33% after cycling back to the United States.

Two years ago veterans and their spouses were offered PAIRS Essentials marriage enrichment retreats. The retreats were put together by the PAIRS foundation, local organizations, and early on were sponsored by the CSRA Wounded Warrior Care Project. The entire retreat focuses on providing support to couples in danger of splitting up due to stress brought on by combat deployments and subsequent reintegration problems.

To date, 160 couples have gone through the retreats and very positive results have emerged. Prior to retreats, about 14% of couples felt their communication skills with each other were positive. That number rose to 93% following the weekend retreat. Many of the participants were veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) deemed the program "Best Practice in Marriage Enrichment." It then provided money to increase the size of the program so it could expand to multiple states.

PAIRS focuses on how both couples perceive their relationship and in doing so, helps both people find a reconnection. Once this is established, both members of the couple tend to find a more positive outlook for their future together. PAIRS is effective with couples, even those suffering from trauma, because it is a learning environment. This means the retreats teach the couples necessary skills to help each other overcome their issues and help heal each other.
