Welcome Home, Inc. Helps Homeless Veterans

May 4, 2010 - Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki has made it the VA's goal to end homelessness among veterans within the next couple of years. In attempting to fulfill this goal, the VA is trying to introduce new programs to help homeless veterans get off the streets. Other programs, however, have been in existence for quite some time attempting to help homeless veterans.

Welcome Home Inc., is a shelter that has been in existence since 1992 and is a place where veterans needing help are always welcome. The shelter is run by Anesia Mattox, a Gulf War Veteran, and someone who very keenly understands homeless veterans and their needs.

The Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia has anywhere from 90-100 veterans homeless veterans registered for their homeless programs.
This number, however, is not an accurate representation of the number of local homeless veterans. A veteran registering with the VA network is directed to such programs as Welcome Home, Inc. that will supply help for their specific needs.

Once the veterans are given food and shelter, they have a new launching point to get their life back on track. Once the veteran is stable, the veteran is given help in seeking treatment for various health issues. Further, the veterans are directed to those benefits they qualify for through the VA and other social services.

On average, veterans spend 3 -9 months at the shelter before they are able to get into a stable home environment. Unfortunately, approximately 150 veterans were turned way last year for lack of space. While Welcome Home, Inc. will be moving into a larger facility, the truth is there will never be enough space.

The homeless population among veterans is growing at an incredible rate. While resources are always going to be limited, the VA is attempting to help as much as possible. Our nation's veterans will not end up on the streets ever again if Eric Shinseki has his way. The only way to make sure this happens is with proactive and progressive veteran aid.
