What is congestive heart failure?

The Social Security Administration may provide disability benefits if you or someone you love suffers from a disorder related to the cardiovascular system. One of the disorders that may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits is chronic heart failure.

Chronic heart failure is also known as congestive heart failure. This is a condition where the heart is unable to pump oxygen-rich blood to the body. This condition can be caused by a number of diseases including those that:

  • Weaken the heart muscles;
  • Lead to stiffening of heart muscles; and
  • Increase the body's demand for oxygen beyond the heart's ability to pump.

The specific diseases that can lead to the above may include:

  • Heart attacks;
  • Myocarditis;
  • Hemochromatosis;
  • Amyloidosis; and
  • High blood pressure.

If left untreated, congestive heart failure can eventually affect other organs in the body.

For more information on the cardiovascular system as it relates to Social Security disability benefits, you can read an Overview of the Cardiovascular System.

If you or someone you love suffers from chronic or congestive heart failure, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. The severity of this condition can leave a person unable to work. Contact a disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility.
