If you have suffered a stroke or any type of severe medical condition that has resulted in a disability and your inability to work, Social Security disability benefits may be available to you and your family.
The American Stroke Association says stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States. When not fatal, strokes are often a cause of severe short-term or long-term disability for the sufferer.
According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, a new study shows that an individual's risk of suffering an ischemic stroke is increased if they have high levels of triglycerides in their blood. The study also shows that the risk may be even greater than for those who have high levels of cholesterol.
Current stroke prevention guidelines focus on total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol but with this new finding, some experts would like to see triglyceride levels included as well.
Furthermore, it has never been proven that high cholesterol is the common risk factor for an individual suffering a stroke, yet statins which are designed to help lower cholesterol, are a common form of treatment given in an effort to decrease the chance of an individual suffering a stroke.
Statins have also been found to lower triglyceride levels so experts believe that it could be one of the factors that actually help to lower the risk of stroke.
