Widows of Disabled Veterans Given Right to Use VA Home Loans

The Disabled Veterans' Surviving Spouses Home Loans Act is bipartisan legislation that was written to repair a defect associated with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) home loan system. If passed, it will allow surviving spouses of veterans with disabilities, whose deaths were not directly related to their service-connected disabilities, continued access to VA home loans, according to an article in The Virginia Real Estate Rama.

The bill was attached to the Veterans Opportunity to Work Act (HR 2433), and passed through the House. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx introduced the bill and feels the country's promise to take care of its soldiers should extend to their families.

She believes the bill serves one extremely important purpose, which is to grant peace of mind to permanently and totally disabled veterans that their spouses will still have access to the VA home loan benefit.

Under the current law, surviving spouses of veterans who passed away due to non-service-related causes, but did suffer from service-related permanent disabilities, can still receive VA compensation checks every month under the VA's surviving spouse benefits but they can't collect a VA home loan.

The new bill is receiving support from both parties as well as many veteran groups such as Disabled American Veterans, America Legion, the MOAA, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Many believe this is veering into the right direction for military widows.
