Women at Higher Risk of Death with Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation, which is when there is an irregular heartbeat, could become severe enough to cause an individual to need Social Security disability benefits.

Health Day reports that in new research it has been found that women are at a higher risk of death with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation.

The mortality rate of women newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation is 10.8 per 1,000 person-years compared to 3.1 per 1,000 person-years in women without the condition. Even after making some adjustments for other factors, the conclusion researchers came to is that the risk of death was still at least twice as likely.

Blood clots are a dangerous risk for patients who have atrial fibrillation. They result from the blood that pools in the heart and if it forms into a clot, it can travel through the bloodstream. If it moves into the brain, it could result in a stroke.

Doctors need to be aware of the risk of death for women with atrial fibrillation and take every step necessary to help treat patients properly.
