Women Less Likely to Receive Lifesaving Procedures for a Heart Attack

If you are medically disabled, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. This can help relieve your financial burden if you are no longer able to work.

In a report from Health Day, a study finds that women are less likely to receive lifesaving procedures for a heart attack than men.

New research shows that doctors are more likely to perform procedures such as heart surgery and angioplasty on men than they are on women.

The findings come from a study done by HealthGrades, which analyzed records on patients between the years 2007 and 2009. They found a significant difference between the care men and women receive when it comes to cardiovascular problems.

Just 33.5% of women suffering a heart attack received lifesaving procedures, in comparison to 45.6% of men. Additionally, it was found that of those women who did have a procedure done, 30% were at an increased risk of death in comparison to men.

Differences in the quality of a hospital were also evident as those women who were treated in a higher quality facility had a 40% decreased risk of death for 9 different conditions.

More than 40,000 women who were 65 years or older, would have had a better chance at survival if they received better quality care as some of the top-rated hospitals provide.
