According to a report from Health News, women are undergoing unnecessary screening and treatment for osteoporosis. When you are facing a long recovery for a severe medical condition, then you could be entitled to long-term disability benefits.
A new study found that in various clinics throughout Connecticut, 41% of women who underwent screening for osteoporosis didn't meet testing guidelines. Current guidelines indicate that those who are 65 or older should be screened, along with those who are 50 and have risk factors for osteoporosis (such as smokers).
Researchers were not able to determine the reason for the testing. There is the possibility that doctors aren't aware of testing guidelines or that patients simply request to be screened.
However, undergoing testing for osteoporosis when it's not needed is not only expensive but it could lead to treatment that is dangerous and unnecessary. Low bone mass could be mistakenly diagnosed as osteoporosis and a patient may be put on bisphosphonates (like Fosamax), which has been linked to risks like heart disease, breast cancer, and stroke.
Although this study was based in Connecticut, roughly 12 million Americans, 50-years and older, have osteoporosis and this kind of error can happen anywhere leading to a disability. When you have questions concerning your eligibility for disability benefits, then you should seek immediate counsel from a Georgia long-term disability lawyer.
Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.
